For years the American Government has waged a losing battle, the War on Drugs, undermining our rights, taxing law enforcement resources, and causing prisons to overflow. Prohibition failed and was repealed; America’s War on Drugs has failed and must be stopped. The War on Drugs does not solve the problems it seeks to address, rather it makes them worse, Legalization, Regulation, and Education can solve America’s ‘Drug Problem.’
Research shows smoking Cannabis Sativa to be relatively safe, unlike many legal substances Aspirin (7,600 deaths a year), Alcohol (85,000 direct consumption), Tobacco Related (435,000), Marijuana kills no one... the war on drugs does. Many studies’ have disproved the claim that Marijuana caused ill effects. Marijuana actually possesses many useful medicinal properties, and there is a long and well documented use as a medicine. The Government claims that Marijuana should be illegal because it is dangerous, yet Marijuana is safer then aspirin, non addictive, clearly Marijuna should be legal.
The Government has gone so fair as to outlaw the growing of industrial hemp, a very versatile crop, grown by our founding fathers! Yet today our prisons are overflowing with drug criminals, indeed under our current laws Georg Washington might be doing hard time, and Thomas Jefferson could be executed! Hemp was an essential crop for the colonies, and by 1850 the U.S. Census counted 8,327 hemp plantations with at least 2000 acres of land. Yet now growing even a single hemp plaint could land you in jail.
The government is using an aggressive media campaign to try and combat teen usage. Studies have shown that these programs are actually increasing the likelihood that teens will use drugs. The government claims that Marijuana must be illegal in order to prevent harm to children.
Yet in the Netherlands where adults can legally purchase Cannabis from coffee shops, teens are less likely to have reported using Marijuana. Thus legalization and regulation are actually a better solution to preventing teenage usage.
It is important to understand how Cannabis Sativa first became illegal, in order to better understand why the war on drugs is so wrong. Hemp had long been an important crop the world over, there is even a great deal of evidence of religious use of Cannabis as a sacrament. Furthermore a document history of medical usage spans far back. Man has used this plant for thousands of years; Cannabis Sativa grows wild in nearly every part of the world.
The war on drugs is a mistake; the war on drugs gifts organized crime an entire black market. Legalizing and Regulating Cannabis would take away this market, help prevent children from obtaining it, and prevent users from coming into contact with hard drugs. The tax revenue would be very substantial, the illegal drug market is a multi billion dolor market, and a large part of that money end up in the hands of foreign drug lords.
While more countries are realizing the hypocrisy of the war on drugs the US has failed to do so. Yet out government has begun to bully other nations to maintain this perverse war against human’s basic rights and freedoms. How can we call out selves free, when the government can dictate that we cannot use, grow, or possess a plant? A plant that could offer hope for patients with serious illnesses, and is safe then Aspirin!
The Government has used a massive media campaign to perpetrate lies. Ignoring valid studies that show possible benefits to using Cannabis and the active chemicals contained within. The Government lists Cannabis as a Schedule one substance, and claims that it has no valid medical usage. Yet medicine has known of the healing powers of this magical plant since before the advent of western medicine.
